Ronkonkoma- Islip, NY (ISP) – Sheltair, the leading FBO at Long Island MacArthur Airport, Islip, New York, welcomed a four engine turboprop P3 Orion, a Gulfstream IV, and a massive USAF Reserve WC-130J hurricane hunter aircraft on Monday, May 8th at 9:00 a.m. as the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) continues its hurricane awareness tour to parts of the nation vulnerable to severe weather systems.

Patricia Junge, Sheltair’s Islip General Manager stated, ‘Those of us who worked through Superstorm Sandy know full well how damaging a hurricane can be.  We also know how aviation became a lifeline for a region of 2.7 million who live on the largest populated island in the United States. Sheltair played an integral role in keeping that air bridge open and NOAA’s visit during Hurricane Awareness Week underscores the need for everyone to be prepared for the next one.”

Sheltair is providing security and support staff that will allow the flight crews to welcome the visiting public to the airport ramp to view their aircraft and informational displays. The FBO is also opening its conference room for an exhibition severe weather preparation as well as accommodating ground display trailers that support the message offered by NOAA’s hurricane trackers. Information will be available from the American Red Cross, state and local government emergency responders, insurance companies and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH).

A NOAA spokesman stated, “It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. If you live in an area prone to these storms, you need to be prepared. Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds and tornadoes from these storms. The National Hurricane Center issue watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather.”
